| THE ANCIENT EGYPTIAN FOUNDATIONS OF WESTERN ASTROLOGY |
 |
| 1998 |
| The ancient Egyptian foundations and contributions to astrology and modern astronomy are often overlooked because of the emphasis on Mesopotamian and Hellenistic origins. Amir Bey traces linguistic (including heiroglyphic), aesthetic, and historical sources that result in new insights into ancient concepts. |
| WHERE HAVE ALL THE HOMEYS GONE? |
 |
| 1995 |
| Long time passing! This "interview" is taken from a series of conversations Amir Bey had with a Viet Nam vet -called here "10-4", who had been a post office police officer and currently an unemployed methodone user, whose brother's entire family (wife, two children, and finally himself) died from AIDS. While he was the curator of the Bronx River Art Center and Gallery, Bey noticed that many of the people he used to see congregate along the side of the building were no longer around; 10-4 clues him in. |
| LA MARTINIQUE |
 |
| SEPTEMBER 12, 2007 |
| Martinique's people are like the island itself: rich potential, abundant diversity, rhythmic graciousness and undaunted fluidity. This series of interviews and imagery bear witness that those attributes were put to the test by Hurricane Dean, with both the island and the people meeting the challenge successfully. |
| AN INTERVIEW WITH THE POET AND PERFORMER JAYNE CORTEZ |
 |
| SEPTEMBER 12, 2007 |
| Jayne Cortez is as relevant now as she has always been: a young fan commented after hearing her for the first time that if the rap audience were exposed to her, the result would be similar to a forest fire. Hmm.. that fusion (her message, their energies, numbers) would be bigger than what Jimi Hendrix and Miles Davis could have been! Don't believe THE HOLLER!? See for yourself; Jayne Cortez and her band Firespitters is a must, so don't miss them! |

| The Ancestral Libation Chamber and Other Public Projects |
 |
| OCTOBER 21, 2007 |
| The Ancestral Libation Chamber has recently been installed at the site of the Negro Burial Ground in New York City's City Hall area. What once has been a denied and forgotten part of American history now has significant monuments dedicated to revering and reviving the lives of those who suffered under slavery. Naturally there are differences about how monuments like these are to be implemented and who is going to carry these projects out; the selection for the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial is an example of how controversies can arise. |

The following is an interview with the author and connoisseur. |
| THE NEW TIMES HOLLER! CHOOSES ??????????? FOR PRESIDENT! |
 |
| JANUARY 9, 2008 |
| Well, y'all can call this bandwagonism, but THE NEW TIMES HOLLER! has endorsed a mainstream candidate for president. We didn't have to hold our noses over the choice, but we do recognize that anyone who runs for president becomes compromised during the process, and no telling what kinds of land mines, half baked schemes and other residue from the Bush regime the upcoming president's gonna inherit. For example, JFK and The Bay of Pigs; he found that waiting for him and reluctantly went along with it. |
| THE ASTROLOGY OF RALPH ELLISON |
 |
| (c) Amir Bey, JAN 1 2008 |
| Ralph Ellison, in the view of this astrologer was important for what he strove to attain in his life: excellence in writing and clarity of perspective that transcended the limitations of racial and ideological categorizations. His stances about African American culture -or lack of them in some people's view- were controversial, yet his writings on Jazz, Blues, and literature are strong affirmations of black people's formative role in the American cultural persona and history. It has been said that Ellison was an elitist and by nature conservative, and his chart shows there are some celestial reasons for it. |

His first feature length film, the romantic comedy Hav Plenty, which was released in 1997, received exuberant praise from all of the major publications, but, it didn't do well at the box office, possibly because it was a "black" film that didn't focus on drugs and the usual stereotypical mayhem. | An Interview with SUMAYYAH SAMAHA |
 |
| JULY 17, 2008 |
ARTS DESK
Special for THE NEW TIMES HOLLER! by AMIR BEY
I recently attended an exhibition of the Lebanese artist Sumayyah Samaha’s work at Skoto Gallery in the Chelsea District in New York City (May 29-July5), where I enjoyed her deep evocation of the earth and the forces within it through the rich textures and colors that she used on her canvases. I could almost smell the moistness of them, and I felt the humidity that is often present in storms, and other aspects of nature there; her work seemed to combine natural and societal realities. Sumayyah’s use of needle and thread on paper were interesting, the way the needles cut into the paper, it was if they were unifying as they separated. Many of those pieces seemed to have opposing forces. |
THE ASTROLOGY OF BARACK OBAMA

 |
| JULY 18, 2008 |
| Well, what more can be said about Barack Obama? What other questions can be asked and answered? THE NEW TIMES HOLLER!'s Astro Portrait Bureau has delved deep into the many layers and facets of this at times puzzling individual. And why is he puzzling? Is it possible that he won't fit into anyone's mold? Or another way to ask it: what do Jesse Jackson and New Yorker Magazine have in common? Hey, anyone with their Sun Squared by Neptune, with an Aquarius Ascendant is hard to figure out! |

| IMPRESSIONS OF MAE REGINA |
 |
| SEPTEMBER 14,2008 |
| We are living in a time that requires going forward with new ideas, and also we are in need of a return to our sources. At least that's the feeling that my visit to the Condomble priestess Mae Regina from Terreiro Do Gantois, Bahia, Brazil, left me with. Presently the world we live in is a compartmentalized one. Conceptually for most of us, "Nature" is a far away place, morality and integrity are opportunistic catchwords, the spirit world is something that most have vague notions of, and our ancestors? Well, didn't they die sometime ago? THE NEW TIMES HOLLER! would like to introduce you to Mae Regina. |
| PRIVATE EYE INVESTIGATIONS |
 |

VISION FESTIVAL XIV |
 |
| JUNE 20, 2009 |
Vision Festival XIV, whose Opening Invocation's message, which featured bassist William Parker, drummer Hamid Drake and the festival's organizer, Patricia Nicholson Parker, was "Change".
However, as the invocation proceeded, I became absorbed in the form and action of the performance, which was evocative of something more ancient and actually familial, which didn't conjure up change, but continuity. I mentioned that to Patricia, who said, "Remember the only thing constant is change
so yes continuity. And change is continuity - but still people are afraid." At right is a photo of Patricia introducing Marshall Allen, this years' LIFETIME OF RECOGNITION honoree.

some time. Chris Rock, motivated by his daughter's tearful question about why she doesn't have "good hair" put him on a quest to look into the causes of such injurious thinking in a young mind and
to inform others. THE HOLLER! checked out the film and got fired up about it all. |

Joanne Conman, an independent scholar has recently published a paper, The Egyptian origins of Planetary Hypsomata,
which focuses on how the Egyptian decan star system influenced Babylonian places of secret and Hellenistic Hypsomata (exaltations) of the planets in their astrologies.
Her ideas are quite intriguing, as they not only point to the origins of those concepts from early Egyptian cosmology, but also differ from established Egyptological ideas.

THE BIRTH OF EGYPTOLOGY as measured by astrology |
 |
| (C) AMIR BEY, 2010
May 5 |
When did Egyptology begin? If it began in a moment, if it had a time of birth, a chart can be done for it. THE NEW TIMES HOLLER!
has come across a place, date, and an instant, that was felt as a revelation. In this discussion, the moment that Jean Francios Champollion
realized what the hieroglyphs were can be considered Egyptology's moment of birth, and the chart done for it has interesting contacts
with the chart for the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb.

KINGS AND QUEENS OF SOUTH CAROLINA |
 |
(c) Amir Bey, 2011
|
One thing about cyberspace: it allows for alternative representations of history. In looking at the
historical setting for my mother's side of the family during Antebellum, Reconstruction, and post Reconstruction South Carolina, I realized the value of telling their story to not only document their past, but also as a reference for the present and future. For example it wasn't
too long ago that someone was trying to tell me how inhumane Sherman's March to the Sea was - apparently, even to this day there are sympathizers with the pro-slavery movement - so my great-grandfather's telling his granddaughter (Moms) about that march "They went through here and in Georgia and shot 'em up!" Shows that not every Southerner thought Sherman's March was a bad thing.
