DUKE ELLINGTON MONUMENT LOCATED AT 110th STREET AND 5TH AVE@ DUKE ELLINGTON CIRCLE
The majestic elegance of Duke Ellington stood tall, but was it so tall that he was out of reach way that this monument is from the viewer? This memorial, as a tribute to Duke was conscientiously put organized by the late pianist Bobby Short and designed by Robert Graham. While it's significant and appropriate that a monument for Duke exist, and that the artist Robert Graham's bronzes are admirable works, THE HOLLER! feels that its concept is not viewer friendly, and that it's message about the importance of Duke could have been better expressed. Again, it's good that we do have a tribute to the Duke.
