This is a sculpture by the mixed media and performance artist Lorenzo Pace. Titled Triumph of the Human Spirit, it is the largest sculpture in the world that is dedicated to the African slave trade. Its commission was inspired by the discovery of 427 graves in the once forgotten Negro Burial Ground in New York City's city hall area. Surrounded by local, state and federal buildings, it's existence is an triumphant anomaly when viewed from the perspective of a society that has long denied certain aspects of its history. -After all, the burial ground itself was buried and built on by skyscrapers as tombstones, with subways running through it like worms in a cemetery.
